What Stories Can Institutions Tell?

Institutions have a lot of stories to tell about their values-based purchasing. Below are some examples of content to consider in values-based purchasing storytelling. A single story could weave together many of these components.

News and Updates

News and updates storytelling can include award announcements, progress made toward sustainability goals, the unveiling of new menu items, or other changes within the institution. These types of stories provide updates on the institution and how it is actively incorporating values-based food purchasing into its regular operations.

Partner Recognition

Recognizing partner organizations is vital to promoting relationships in values-based food purchasing. Partners help an institution build and grow its values-based procurement program, whether it is through a nonprofit that helps facilitate connections or for-profit corporations that agree to work together to meet values-based goals. Partner recognition sends a signal of market and institutional credibility and can be a gateway to other opportunities in sustainable food purchasing and procurement.

Vendor Recognition

Vendor recognition can include spotlight articles, vendor profiles, or recognition of achievements. Highlighting specific vendors can showcase the institution’s commitment to values-based purchasing to guests and other partners. These spotlights can also help internal personnel become more aware of the individual vendors the institution partners with. Spotlighting vendors can be an impactful way to show appreciation to vendors, which can strengthen vendor relationships.

Team Member Recognition

Team member recognition is a great way to tell an institution’s story because it highlights the work of the individuals who make values-based purchasing programs successful. Recognizing personnel achievements introduces the external community to the faces behind the institution. Employee spotlights, profiles, or interviews can be disseminated through blog posts, articles, or via in-person events, and can shed light on the institution’s everyday practices. Personnel and team members can also be recognized through social media posts, including profile “take overs,” which showcase a day-in-the-life of an employee.

Milestone Achievements

Announcing a milestone achievement for the program can be a great way to reiterate the institution’s commitment to its values to both its internal and external community. Recognizing an anniversary of a partnership or a pledge, celebrating reaching a values-based procurement goal, or commemorating the impact of values-based purchasing over a certain amount of time are all milestones that an institution can use to tell its values-based story.
